Family mediation informed by a deep understanding of family relationships, conflict and emotional wellbeing
Separation and family change can be one of the most challenging periods in a person's life. Alongside my mediation training, I bring extensive experience in trauma-informed practice, safeguarding, domestic abuse awareness, and child and adolescent mental health.
This means I understand not only the practical issues families need to resolve, but also how stress, conflict and uncertainty can affect communication, decision-making and relationships.
My role is to provide a calm, structured and impartial space where conversations can take place safely and constructively, helping families move forward with greater clarity and confidence.
Why Families Choose A New Chapter
Every family is different. Alongside professional mediation training, I bring a unique combination of experience supporting children and families through periods of significant change.
A calm and structured approach
Mediation can feel daunting. My aim is to create a supportive environment where both parties feel heard and respected.
Understanding conflict and emotional overwhelm
My background in trauma-informed practice and child and adolescent mental health helps me recognise when stress and difficult emotions are affecting communication and decision-making.
Child-focused practice
Where children are involved, their wellbeing remains central to discussions and future planning.
Safety and sensitivity
I have extensive safeguarding training and am a qualified Kent Domestic Abuse Champion, allowing me to carefully assess whether mediation is appropriate and safe.
Flexible appointments
Online and in-person appointments are available from Whitstable, serving families across Kent and beyond.
How Family Mediation Works
Step 1 — MIAM (Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting)
The process begins with an individual Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting (MIAM). This private meeting explains how family mediation works, explores your circumstances and assesses whether mediation is suitable.
In many cases, attending a MIAM is required before making a court application relating to children or financial matters.
Step 2— Mediation Sessions
If mediation is suitable and both parties agree to proceed, structured mediation sessions are arranged to address the issues that need to be resolved.
Sessions may focus on child arrangements, parenting plans, financial matters or other practical issues following separation or divorce.
Appointments are available online, in person in Kent, or via shuttle mediation where parties remain in separate rooms.
Step 3 — Recording Proposals & Next Steps
Where proposals are reached, outcomes can be clearly recorded. Clients are encouraged to obtain independent legal advice if agreements are to be made legally binding through the court.
Mediation aims to support practical, workable arrangements that reduce conflict and provide clarity for the future.
If you would like to find out more about MIAMs, or book an appointment to discuss whether family mediation is suitable for your circumstances, please get in touch.
Meet Your Family Mediator
I am Tara Flynn, a family mediator based in Whitstable, Kent, supporting couples and families through separation, divorce and family reorganisation.
Alongside my mediation training, I bring specialist experience in trauma-informed practice, safeguarding, domestic abuse awareness and child and adolescent mental health.
Over many years I have supported women, children and families through separation, conflict and significant life transitions. This experience allows me to bring both structure and understanding to difficult conversations while remaining fully impartial throughout the mediation process.
Alongside my mediation qualification, I bring extensive training in trauma-informed practice, safeguarding children and domestic abuse awareness, and a Level 5 Diploma in Yoga Therapy both for adults and child and adolescent mental health. This means I'm attentive to the subtleties of how stress and conflict show up in the room beyond what is said.
Mediation works best when people feel heard, informed and able to make considered decisions. My role is to guide the process clearly and impartially, helping families reduce conflict and move towards sustainable outcomes.
